Eliminate pet odors in and around your home
Most people have at some point in their lifetime
have seen a skunk, either close up or from faraway,
or in some unfortunate cases, as roadkill on a hot
summer day. These normally docile mammals are often
found roaming the backstreets and allies of cities
and rural towns looking for something to eat in an
overturned garbage can or scrounging for dog or cat
food left behind by neighborhood pets. Some skunks
are even bolder and will take up residence in
peoples’ backyards, especially under their patios.
The more memorable side of seeing a skunk or knowing
one is around the corner from you is the incredibly
potent and offensive odor - or musk - delivered in
copious amounts when the a skunk is agitated or
startled.
Chemists have identified seven distinct compounds
that make up skunk musk. The major ingredients are
called “thiols”, which are created by decomposing
proteins. Skunk musk over centuries evolved to
resemble the stench other animals identify as decay
and that they naturally stay away from. Two of the
most potent compounds responsible for the strong
musk odor are: butene-1-thiol (also known as Butyl
Mercaptan) and methyl-1-butanethiol. The rest of the
elements are slower acting thioacetates or not
readily indentifiable in nature or as man-made
compounds.
Household pets are usually the unfortunates who end
up getting sprayed by a skunk. When this happens,
the poor pet is banned from the house for a number
of days, weeks if not longer, and after dozens of
baths in tomato juice or coffee grinds, the
overwhelming sickening scent will linger for months
and often resurface in a milder form when a pet's
fur gets damp.
So what’s the most effective way to eliminate skunk
musk? Many experts say that the tomato juice bath is
not necessarily the best solution. Why? It has to do
with something called “olfactory fatigue”, a natural
condition where, when bombarded with potent doses of
a very strong or foul odor, the olfactory system
adjusts. Simply put, you get used to the horrible
stink after a while. Now all you can smell is the
tangy aroma of the tomato juice that you’re pouring
over poor animal. If your neighbour should happen to
pay you a visit, chances are they would either run
away fast, or be the first to pinch their nose and
point out that your poor pet still stinks to high
heavens of skunk. So much for the tomato juice!
There so many so called tried-and-true skunk musk
deodorising recipes out there ranging from baths
using vanilla extract, vinegar, orange juice,
certain laundry soap or mouthwash brands, and other
dubious-sounding solutions.
